Plans to transform a college campus into a housing estate look set to be given the go-ahead.

The development would see the site of South Staffordshire College's campus in Tamworth turned into 123 homes and an 80-bed care home.

The proposal, led by Homes England, has been opposed by Sport England, which raised concerns over the loss of a playing pitch.

But the plans have been recommended for approval with a decision set to be made by Tamworth Borough Council's planning committee on Tuesday.

Twenty per cent of the new homes would be affordable and the estate would be accessed from Croft Street.

Addressing Sport England's concerns, Homes England said the pitch at the college was in an inaccessible location and its retention would not be compatible with the development.

The applicant identified Rene Road playing field as a possible alternative if improvements were made to the site.

Planning officers argued the loss of the pitch could be compensated by the provision of an equal or higher standard facility at an accessible location.

The planning application was submitted after the demolition of six college buildings was given the green light by the council in 2024.

A new college is being built to replace the demolished 1960s section of the former Co-op building in Tamworth town centre.
