Three Asian hornet queens were trapped over the weekend

Asian hornet season has started "earlier than usual" in Guernsey, a specialist team has warned.

The island's Asian hornet team said three queens were captured within 24 hours over the weekend.

The hornets were trapped in Cartaret, St Peter Port and Calais.

Members of the team said they thought the "persistent easterly winds" were responsible for the influx.

The team said the first Asian hornet queen had been trapped behind the Rockmount restaurant in Cartaret by one of their regular volunteers on Saturday afternoon.

The second found had flown through a living room window of a home just inland from Fort Grey, St Peter Port before being caught in a jam jar.

The third hornet queen had been trapped in a shed next to Saumarez Manor, Calais, they added.
