Up to £1.5bn would be pledged to rebuild a town's hospital, the government announced.

Construction is due to begin on Kettering General Hospital in Northamptonshire between 2032 and 2034.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting said between £1bn and £1.5bn would be spent on the landmark project.

Kettering MP Rosie Wrighting said she was "relieved" the government had provided an "honest, realistic and deliverable timetable" for the work.

A £500m scheme at the hospital was one of 40 promised by the previous Conservative government.

It stalled when Labour gained power so a review of funding and viability could take place, but was confirmed with extra investment on Monday.

Streeting told the Commons that pre-construction work would begin from 2028 to 2030, with spades in the ground by 2032.

Wrighting, a Labour MP, added: "We all know how important Kettering General Hospital is for our community.

"I will continue to campaign for Kettering General Hospital at every opportunity and keep local residents updated on the progress of the programme every step of the way."

Speaking in 2023, Kettering's then-Conservative MP Philip Hollobone said he wanted work to begin by early 2024.

He said the hospital was "much-loved" by people in the town.
