A car was stopped after it had been driven the wrong way along the M5 in Devon during a "shocking" incident, police have said.

Devon and Cornwall Police said it was called out at about 19:50 GMT on Sunday when motorists reported seeing a yellow vehicle going the wrong way on the northbound carriageway between junctions 28 for Cullompton and 30 for Exeter.

Officers stopped the car near junction 29 in Exeter and a 36-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs and for dangerous driving.

The force said she has been bailed until 13 March and anyone who witnessed the incident has been asked to contact investigating officers.

PC William Welch said: "We understand how shocking this incident will have been to witness and would like to thank the multiple members of public who contacted 999 to alert us."
