Brighton & Hove City Council says the new bus lane will improve journey times

Work begins on a new bus lane on a busy road with the aim of improving services along Brighton seafront.

The lane will be on Marine Parade, between the junctions of Lower Rock Gardens and the Sea Life Centre.

More than 250 buses travel in each direction per day on the route.

Trevor Muten, Brighton & Hove City Council's cabinet member for transport, parking and public realm, says the new bus lane "will make journey times so much more reliable".

"It will also encourage more people to travel by bus and help more buses run on time," he added.

The council says it will also install a new pedestrian crossing, and resurface the road.

The bus lane is being built without the need to remove any lanes for other traffic, the council says.

Once finished, it will operate 24 hours a day and will also be used by taxis and cyclists.

The scheme is part of the council's Bus Service Improvement Plan.

The construction is being done in stages to minimise the disruption to events including the Brighton Marathon in April.

Work begins on Monday to prepare for the new pedestrian crossing.

Towards the end of March, the area will be resurfaced before work commences on the crossings along Marine Parade.

The full resurfacing of Marine Parade will take place later in the spring.
