'Devastating' Bodmin house fire extinguished

A "devastating" fire has been extinguished at a house in Bodmin, according to Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service.

Firefighters were called to a property in the St Tudy area just before 11:45 BST.

Incident Commander Jason Doney said about 35 to 40 firefighters from Bodmin, Delabole, St Austell, Padstow, Liskeard and St Austell attended the scene.

"It's absolutely devastating for the owners," he said. "It's not a great position to be in."

He added: "It was quite an extensive fire and there was a little bit of wind which obviously helped push it through the building.

"The roof is a total loss and the first floor happened to catch fire from the burning embers.

"The ground floor, we believe, has been saved but the amount of water we have put on the fire has damaged it too."

Mr Doney said it was not clear what had caused the fire but an investigation would be undertaken.

He also said the owner of the house had been out of the country at the time of the incident but had been informed.
