A 22 year-old crowned as the new Miss Shropshire says she wants to inspire young women and promote local businesses.

Nell Massin, 22, from Shrewsbury, won the title at the final in the Buttermarket in the town on Sunday, beating seven other young women.

Miss Shropshire is crowned every year and is aimed at being a representative of the county - to be a role model, inspiration to others and show the values of the county.

So what does it take to become Miss Shropshire?

Ms Massin applied on a whim, wanting to do something that made her step out of her comfort zone.

After applying, contestants took part in several rounds - for which they had to post their entries on social media.

They included a bare-faced round, which promoted natural beauty.

"We had to show our bare face and it was all about showing that it's not all glitz and glam and that natural skin is very much still a thing," she said.

Another task was to showcase a talent - Ms Massin's was open water swimming, which she did in Ellesmere lake.

"I started back in lockdown because all the pools shut down and the next best thing was to go swimming in open water," she added.

Ms Massin won the sustainable round, which saw the women have to create a 1920s outfit out of second-hand clothing.

"I was looking for pearls, sequins, I found everything I needed from head to toe," she said.

"[Then] a week before, my dress broke. So I went on Vinted to find a second-hand dress…and that's the one I won [in]."

Ms Massin also won the charity round which saw her partner with a local charity.

"I chose the Shropshire Wildlife Trust - it really aligns with what I want to stand for which is working for a better future," she said.

"One of the things I did was create bird boxes – so for every £15 donated… we put them up all over Shropshire."

The grand final featured a live fashion show by the contestants.

Reflecting on the moment she won, she said it was "surreal".

"Looking back at the pictures, I'm not smiling and I think it's because I'm just in a state of shock," Ms Massin said.

Miss England next

"[The role] is representing the county as best as you can," she said.

"The way I'm going to do it is that I want to really show all the local talent and businesses that we have.

She plans to use her platform to promote making the fashion industry more sustainable.

As for the next step in the contest world, she is automatically entered into the Miss England contest in November.

"It's a very different world and I'm competing against girls that have a lot more experience under their belt but I'm really excited to represent Shropshire," Ms Massin said.
