Brown bins are to be emptied once a week from April next year, Hull City Council has said.

Local authorities have been told to introduce weekly food waste collections by next spring.

Now, the council's ruling cabinet has confirmed that it will move from fortnightly to weekly collections of food and garden waste.

Homes without gardens will receive weekly collections of food waste.

Council officer Adam McArthur said the authority wanted to implement an "efficient and environmentally responsible" service.

"Weekly mixed brown bin collections will not only help us comply with government legislation, but also significantly enhance our recycling efforts and reduce overall waste," he added.

Last year, the previous Conservative government announced funding worth almost £300m for councils to move to weekly food waste collections.

The council said it had received almost £1.5m in capital funding to implement the changes from April next year.

A trial of the scheme is due to be staged across all council buildings and flats, beginning next month.
