A property developer has said it has "ambitious plans" for a former Debenhams building in Hull city centre.

DBG Group confirmed it had exchanged contracts and purchased the 180,000 sq ft site between Prospect Street and Ferensway.

The developer has yet to confirm details of its plan for the building, but said it was "excited to bring it back to life".

The site has been empty since May 2021, when Debenhams closed more than 100 stores around the UK, with the loss of about 12,000 jobs.

'Prime space'

It is unclear whether the site will be retained for retail use or redeveloped as a residential or office space.

Details are likely to become clearer when a planning application is submitted to Hull City Council, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The company's previous developments in Hull include the conversion of a former TSB bank, in George Street, into 47 apartments.

Last year, it announced plans to convert Shirethorn House, in Prospect Street, into a 76-apartment development called City Point.

In a social media post, DBG Group said: "Our investment marks a significant step in redeveloping this prime space, and we have ambitious plans for its future. Stay tuned."
