A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire in a city centre flat.

Emergency services were called to a flat on Islington Row Middleway, near the Five Ways roundabout in Birmingham, just after 05:20 GMT on Tuesday.

West Midlands Fire Service said crews dealt with a blaze in the bedroom of a second-floor flat and rescued one person from a staircase.

Three men and one women were believed to have been taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, the service added.

The fire, which happened in a four-storey building primarily made up of flats, was contained to the bedroom, the service added.

It sent several crews to the incident which was scaled down to one fire engine later in the morning.

West Midlands Police said the man who was arrested had been taken to hospital for assessment and would be questioned.

The section of Islington Row Middleway near the roundabout has ground-floor shops and businesses, including a dentist, ice-cream parlour and bridal shop.
