Services on the Tyne and Wear Metro network have been disrupted by a suspected cable theft.

No trains were running in either direction between Pelaw, in Gateshead, and Sunderland's South Hylton, from 05:00 BST until shortly after 11:00.

Operator Nexus apologised for the inconvenience.

Network Rail, which owns and maintains the line beyond Pelaw, has since carried out repairs.

It said it condemned "anyone taking part" in criminal behaviour.

Northumbria Police has been approached for comment.
