City centre on-street parking charges to rise

The cost of on-street parking in Nottingham is to increase in August.

Nottingham City Council said it had reviewed the charges because demand for parking was outstripping the number of spaces.

The increased tariffs are expected to generate an extra £237,000 annually, which the authority said would be invested in the city's transport network.

According to the council, the move is intended to "encourage turnover of cars and complement other wider city and transport strategies".

In a report, Nottingham City Council said: "With only 1,400 on-street parking spaces in the city centre, it is important [to] manage the high-levels of demand for these by encouraging short stay parking on-street whilst discouraging the utilisation of the limited kerbside space by medium or long-stay customer parking.

"This decision to increase the tariffs is deemed necessary to help reduce the cruising of cars to keep the highway flowing but also to encourage other forms of transport and/or parking."

The council said increases would be applied in its parking zones one, two and three in the immediate city centre from 4 August and apply to all lengths of stay.

In zone one, the cost of parking for one hour will rise from £2.80 to £3, with the charge for two hours rising from £5.60 to £6.

In zone two, the fee for one hour will increase from £1.50 to £2 and from £3 to £4 for two hours.

And in zone three, the price of parking for one hour will rise from 80p to £1, with the cost for two hours going from £1.60 to £2.

The cost of daily parking in streets near the Queen's Medical Centre will also increase from £2.50 to £4.

In Basford, St Ann's and at Victoria Embankment the daily charge will rise from £2.50 to £3.50.

The council said it had last its changed on-street parking rates in April 2024.
