A woman has been killed and her daughter injured after being hit by a car.

Essex Police officers were called after reports of two women pedestrians involved in a collision at the junction of Hamlet Court Road and St John's Road in Westcliff-on-Sea, just before 17:30 GMT on Thursday.

The mother, who was 52, died in hospital. Her 23-year-old daughter's injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing, the force said.

A 31-year-old woman driver of a black Suzuki Splash was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

She remained in custody for questioning on Friday, a police spokesperson added.

The force appealed for witnesses.
