Graves 'trashed' and littered with beer cans
Brighton & Hove City Council has said it is "appalled" after a cemetery was left in an "unacceptable state".
People had reported that a section of Hove Cemetery had been "trashed", with beer cans on the floor and some ornaments moved from certain graves.
Councillor Alan Robins said: "Maintaining our cemeteries and protecting the dignity of all those buried or remembered at our sites is something we take incredibly seriously.
"I understand the upset anyone visiting this area to remember a loved one will have felt upon finding memorials disturbed and litter left strewn about."
The council said that a team tidied the area "as quickly as possible" once they were made aware of the incident.
Councillor Robins added: "I ask those responsible to seriously consider their actions and how they will have impacted others."
