Smashing Pumpkins to perform headline gig in Essex

The Smashing Pumpkins will perform the headline gig in Colchester this August

Grammy Award-winning alternative rock group The Smashing Pumpkins are to perform a headline gig in Essex.

The band are the latest act to announce a performance at Castle Park, Colchester, this August.

The Smashing Pumpkins will be joined on stage by the rock band Skunk Anansie and post-punk band White Lies on 14 August.

Also performing as part of the Colchester Castle Summer Series are noughties pop-punk band Busted, garage singer Craig David, reggae band UB40, rock bands Texas and James, and ska group Madness.

"It's an honour to host an act with such a profound legacy and cultural impact," event organiser Rob Waller said.

Since forming in the United States in 1988, the group have enjoyed global success, picking up two Grammy Awards and gongs at other prestigious ceremonies like the MTV Video Music Awards.

Tickets for The Smashing Pumpkins' tour, which also includes dates in London, Halifax in West Yorkshire, and Scarborough in North Yorkshire, go on sale on Friday.

Castle Park will also be home to the ALB Festival in September, which will feature performances from pop stars Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Pixie Lott.
