The Met Office has issued a fresh warning for snow and ice as wintry weather continued to disrupt the first week back to school in parts of Scotland.

More than 50 schools in the Highlands have been affected on Wednesday, with most closed for the day due to snow and ice on roads.

A handful of schools in Aberdeenshire are shut while dozens more were opening later.

The Met Office has a yellow "be aware" warning for snow and ice in place for northern and western Scotland until midday, and a yellow warning for north and north-east Scotland until midnight on Thursday.

The Met Office said the latest warning includes a forecast for snow accumulating to 3-7 cm at low levels, with 10-15 cm possible above 150m.

Wednesday's school closures follow earlier disruption this week, particularly in Moray and Aberdeenshire.
