The discovery of a dead dog dumped in a canal in Wolverhampton has prompted an investigation.

The RSPCA said it was unclear if the chestnut brown bulldog-type animal had died from drowning or some previous injury, but it appeared to have been in the water for up to 48 hours before being reported.

No microchip has been found on the dog, but the charity said its body had large patches without any fur, possibly because of fleas.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Holly Temple, said: "This is a public place where people could be out with young children - to be walking along a canal and see something so awful must be very upsetting."

The dog was found dead by a member of the public in the canal between Lower Lorseley fields and Wednesfield Road, on Saturday.

The RSPCA said it appeared it was aged between three and four and staff were trying to find its owner.
