Five men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was shot dead in Wolverhampton.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Eastfield Grove, just yards from a primary school, at about 15:20 GMT on Tuesday.

The victim, a man in his 20s, died at the scene, West Midlands Police said.

The men, aged between 19 and 48, were detained in Birmingham on Wednesday night and remained in custody, a force spokesperson added.

"This is a significant development in our investigation and we'd continue to ask anyone with information to contact us."

A second man who was injured in the shooting was receiving hospital treatment for gunshot wounds, officers added.

Nearby Eastfield Primary School was put into lockdown as a precaution following the shooting, which happened near the end of the school day as pupils were preparing to go home.

A city council spokesperson said the lockdown was in place for 40 minutes to "ensure the safety of pupils and staff".

Police have continued to appeal for anyone with information or mobile phone, doorbell or dashcam footage, to come forward.

Det Supt Shaun Edwards added: "A young man has tragically lost his life and we've teams working round-the-clock to establish exactly what happened and why.

An online portal where people can send information, video or images relating to the incident has also been set up.
