The drop-in event at Tiverton council offices aims to help businesses understand the changes to rates relief

A council is hosting a drop-in event to help businesses understand upcoming changes to business rates relief.

Mid Devon District Council said changes to business rates relief meant a number of firms would see "a larger than usual increase" in 2025/26.

Announced by the government in last year's budget, the 75% relief on business rates, which are charged on most non-domestic properties such as shops, offices, pubs and factories, will be replaced by a 40% discount for retail, hospitality and leisure companies from 1 April.

The council said revenue officers would be on hand at Tiverton council offices to answer any questions about the changes on Thursday 20 March.

'Tough' trading conditions

Councillor James Buczkowski said it was "essential that we do all we can to support our local firms through these challenges".

"With the reduction in retail, hospitality, and leisure relief from 75% to 40%, some businesses will see a sharp increase in their costs at a time when trading conditions are already tough.

"This free event is an opportunity for businesses to get clear information, ask questions, and explore what support is available to help them navigate these changes."

People can attend the event on 20 March at any time between 11:30 and 19:00 GMT.
