A bin man died during a "tragic incident" involving a bin lorry in Devon, a council has confirmed.

Torbay Council said a SWISCo worker was killed in a crash which took place on Higher Warberry Road, Torquay, at about 12:45 BST on Tuesday.

Devon and Cornwall Police said a man in his 20s from Torquay was pronounced dead at the scene and the incident had been raised with the Health and Safety Executive.

Council bosses said the authority would be supporting family, friends and colleagues of the worker following the "deeply upsetting" incident.

A council spokesperson said: "The safety and wellbeing of our teams is our highest priority, and we are fully cooperating with the authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

"We ask for patience and understanding as we work through the details.

"This incident is deeply upsetting for the family and all our colleagues, and we ask that the community is mindful of the impact this will be having on them over the coming days."

Police have asked witnesses and anyone with relevant information or dashcam footage to get in contact.
