Disruption expected as works begin on busy road

A council has warned of weeks of potential disruption as a pedestrian crossing is upgraded.

The "essential" improvement works to the crossing on the A4 Rowden Hill in Chippenham, Wiltshire, will begin later and last for approximately three weeks.

Traffic management, a signalled crossing and multi-way temporary traffic signals will be in place "to enable the works to be carried out safely", a Wiltshire Council spokesperson explained.

Samantha Howell, director of highways at the council, said: "We understand this work may cause some disruption and we thank road users for their patience."

"These improvements are essential to keeping our road network safe," added Ms Howell.

The council explained the crossing infrastructure was nearing the end of its lifespan and was being replaced as part of the authority's traffic signal refurbishment programme.

Ms Howell said the scheme "allows us to identify and prioritise signals that need refurbishment once they've reached the end of their design life".
