June Jury, 94, has become the oldest competitive croquet player in the world

A 94-year-old woman from Kent has become the oldest competitive croquet player in the world.

June Jury has been playing for Ramsgate Croquet Club for 36 years, who once joked that her age could make her a record-breaker.

Now, after more than a year of investigating, Guinness World Records has confirmed that June is in fact the oldest competitive player on the planet.

"By the age I am, I don't get very excited about things but this has been great," she said.

The record was officially recognised when June was 93 years and 109 days old. She has just been presented with the certificate, four months before her 95th birthday.

June, who has 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, said she loved playing croquet because it was "a beautiful game" and meant she could enjoy the fresh air.

"I'm very lucky that I can still think for myself, I will [keep playing] for as long as I can," she said.

It was fellow club member Jane Young who worked with Guinness to get the world record made official.

"I did it as a secret but because it was a new record they had to decide what the criteria was, so we had to give them more and more information," said Jane.

"June was absolutely delighted that we were doing it. It still find it very emotional and I'm also relieved."
