MP to introduce slip road safety bill in Parliament

A campaign to improve safety on a major road will be discussed in Parliament.

There have been ongoing concerns about the safety of the A34, which runs through Berkshire, connecting Southampton to Oxford.

Residents in Berkshire have raised particular issues with the slip roads at East Ilsley and Beedon.

Olivia Bailey, the Labour MP for Reading West and Mid Berkshire, who represents the villages, has announced that she will be raising the issue in Parliament on Tuesday.

She will introduce a 10-minute rule bill on the issue, which allows a backbench MP to introduce a bill in Parliament.

If the leader of the House of Commons supports the bill, it will be allowed a second reading.

After a successful vote, the bill can then become law.

It is the latest in Mrs Bailey's campaign for safety measures, which involved a meeting with National Highways in April.

Mrs Bailey said: "Throughout this campaign, I have made it clear to my constituents that I will use all legislative levers available to me, and this 10-minute rule bill is one of them.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to present the A34 Slip Road Safety (East Ilsley and Beedon) Bill to Parliament, and look forward to sharing constituents' experiences and making the case directly to government and my colleagues on Tuesday."
