Motorists have been told there is no timescale for reopening a busy bridge that has been closed because of a burst water main.

Anglian Water said it was told of the issue in Broad Road, Braintree, in Essex, on Thursday evening.

The bridge is situated at the busy junction of Broad Road, Convent Hill and Bradford Street.

A spokesperson at Anglian Water said the work to repair the mains pipe was more "complex" because of the location.

Complaints and photos of the bridge have been shared on social media following the closure.

Local resident John Parish said: "Getting to town will be a headache as one will have to try and get round the awful bypass or get through Bocking village, so another environmental surge for pollution sitting in traffic jams."

An Anglian Water spokesperson said its teams were working hard on site.

"Given the complexities of the repair, we're not yet able to confirm a timeline for reopening the road," they said.

"However, we will complete the work as quickly and as safely as possible.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding while we get things back to how they were."
