New bus lane camera to start enforcing traffic rules

Motorists will face fines if they drive in a bus lane in a town centre after a new traffic camera was installed by a council.

The device at the top end of Gold Street in Northampton, between College Street and Bridge Street, will monitor the bus lane from Monday.

Motorists using the lane unlawfully will receive a £70 penalty charge notice, reduced to £35 if paid within 21 days.

West Northamptonshire Council said the technology was part of its phased rollout of enforcement cameras, aimed at improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, while promoting better driving behaviour.

Unlike some other locations, there will be no six-month warning period for violations at the site, meaning penalties will be issued immediately to those breaking the rules.

The Gold Street enforcement follows similar measures implemented at The Drapery.
