The Joyful Deli has been operating in the village of Addingham for several years

A rural farm shop and cafe in a West Yorkshire village has been given permission to operate after years of haggling with planning chiefs.

The Joyful Deli in Addingham, Ilkley, had previously been refused consent by Bradford Council following a dispute over highways issues.

But the business, which has been operating for several years, was granted retrospective permission on Wednesday after submitting amended plans which halved the proposed footprint of the site.

The Joyful Deli, which is based in a former agricultural building at Holme House Farm on Ilkley Road, hailed the news as "brilliant" in a post on social media.

In a planning officer's report explaining the decision, the council said that the shop and cafe's location, "set some distance from Addingham village", meant the development would be "highly car dependent".

Objections had been raised about the impact of on-street parking along the narrow section of Ilkley Road that runs alongside the shop, as the site does not have off-street parking.

Concerns about the impact of on-street parking outside the venue had been raised

However, the authority said that the deli's commitment to reduce its footprint by 50% would result in a "notable reduction in the demand for on-street parking".

"The previous reason for refusal on this matter is therefore overcome," the report added.

The application had drawn six letters of support and 10 letters of objection from members of the public.

In a post shared by Joyful Deli on Facebook responding to the development, business owner Jilly Pittendreigh said: "After several months of hard work and determination, The Joyful Deli has been granted full planning permission.

"We would like to thank all of our friends, family and customers for your loyalty and support during challenging times, it's now time to celebrate."

Olympic gold medal-winning triathlete Alistair Brownlee recently hired the venue to host a retirement party for friends and family after announcing the end of his sporting career.
