A man in his 40s has died after being hit by a car.

Police were called to reports of a crash between a blue Saab car and a pedestrian in West Street in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, just before 16:00 GMT on Friday.

The man died shortly after and his next of kin have been informed while a man in his 80s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed pending further inquiries.

Sgt Alex Ward, of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit, offered his sympathies and appealed for witnesses.

"This is a deeply tragic incident, and our sincere sympathies are with the friends and family of the man who died," he said.

"We are asking anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the collision or has any dashcam footage to please get in touch with us as a matter of urgency to help our investigation."
