On 1 May voters in Hull and East Yorkshire will decide the first elected mayor of the new combined authority. You can find more information about the election and the candidates here.

Anne Handley, 63, is the leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council and a lifelong resident of the area

Mrs Handley, who is the Conservative candidate, said "This is my home and Hull and East Yorkshire people are my neighbours, friends, colleagues and business partners." She added, "I am committed to improving the lives of everyone in the area."

She says she will create jobs and training opportunities

Mrs Handley has pledged to bring new employment opportunities to the region.

"Whether it is on the industrial Humber, across our farms and countryside or in our towns, I will bring new jobs here," she said. "As a former teacher, I know how to deliver better training and skills so that people of all ages can take advantage of the opportunities I create."

She insists there will be no additional taxes due to devolution

"The revenue and powers I secure from devolution will put more money in your pocket and take none out," she said. "If I am elected mayor, I will ensure that you will not be burdened with additional taxes associated with my growth agenda. Everyone is set to benefit."

Anne Handley is placing a focus on better roads

She says she recognises the importance of well-maintained infrastructure and will prioritise enhancing both main and local roads.

"We need to maintain and improve our roads," she adds. "With me as your mayor, I will secure extra funding to help do that. I will prioritise not just fixing our roads, but also adding value to our neighbourhoods and rural facilities."

She also wants to improve public transport

Mrs Handley has pledged to work with the relevant bodies to enhance public transport.

"We need good public transport to help people get to work, school, the shops and to access public services." She added, "if I am your mayor, I will use our extra funding to improve local transport right across the region."

She is pledging to enhance broadband and mobile connectivity

Mrs Handley said she would collaborate with providers to upgrade broadband and mobile services – especially in rural areas.

"Whether you are trying to watch Netflix at home, answer your emails or pay bills for work, in Hull or on top of the Wolds, you must have good phone and internet connections."
