Plans approved to convert old pub into flats

Plans to convert an eyesore former pub in Bradford – described as "a detracting feature in the area" – into housing have been approved.

The Woodend pub, in Woodend Crescent, Windhill, has stood empty for years and has recently suffered from vandalism and a fire.

Previous plans to turn the building into nine flats were refused in 2023 over concerns they would offer "unsatisfactory living conditions" for future residents.

However, a new application to convert the building into residential use has now been approved by Bradford Council.

The new proposal is for fewer flats, with just four on the ground floor, and the refurbishment of the existing first floor accommodation.

There would also be off street parking for 10 cars, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Approving the application, Bradford Council planning officers said the building "lent itself to a residential conversion".

The application said the development would create three, three-bed flats and two, two-bed flats.

It added: "This will be an improvement on visual amenity within the local area, whilst making good use of a vacant property."

Planners said: "The current building is in a poor condition and would clearly benefit from a programme of refurbishment and repair.

"This would also have a positive impact upon the quality of the immediate street scene to the benefit of the local community.

"The property is currently a significant detractor, visually, which is exacerbated by its position on an open, corner plot.

"Any proposals to bring the building back into active use would represent an improvement on the current position.

"The re-use of the property is therefore to be actively encouraged."
