Trio to represent Great Britain in jiu-jitsu event
A martial arts teacher has said he is "very proud" of three students who have been chosen to represent Great Britain at their first international jiu-jitsu championships.
Filip, 17, Victoria, 14 and Igor, 11, who train at the Draco Dojo Martial Arts Academy in Swindon, are among 20 British youngsters travelling to Belgium for the Flanders Open 2025, which is taking place from 18-19 January.
"When I found out I was going I was so overwhelmed with emotion," said Victoria, who will compete in the under-16 female category.
"I think it is a big deal for each of my students and they've worked hard for it," said Adam Esz, sensei and founder of Draco Dojo.
Victoria told BBC Radio Wiltshire: "You get such an adrenaline rush, it's so exciting.
"You're either throwing them over your shoulder or someone's throwing you over their shoulder."
Victoria was picked for the team after competing at an event in Wales last April.
"Honestly, after the training when I found out I was going, I was like 'what?'
"After I calmed down, I was so excited. I didn't know what to think because I was so terrified of competing but oh my god, it was so good."
"I am very proud of these three, as well as of each of my students," said Mr Esz.
"I am demanding as a trainer and they would not have gone further without my approval.
"It will be tough but they are well prepared and will cope.
"Above all, their achievement is down to hard work, self-discipline and dedication, not only from the competitors but also from the parents."
