Bristol in Pictures: Heroes, just for one day

The AJ Bell Big Bristol Run saw thousands of people take on the 10k or the half marathon course on Sunday, cheered on by huge crowds in the sunshine.
The juniors and minis event took place on Saturday, and while they were pounding the streets, more than 50,000 Bath and Bristol fans were turning Cardiff into a corner of the West for the big Premiership rugby derby.
Another event drawing huge crowds this week has been the Badminton Horse Trials in South Gloucestershire.

Doing us proud: Some 1,000 younger runners got the weekend going as the first ever AJ Bell Great Bristol Run juniors and minis event wound its away around the city centre.

Great effort: On Sunday it was the turn of the adults to take on the two courses, starting near the centre then, for the half marathon runners, heading out onto the Portway and back, cheered on by enthusiastic crowds all the way.

Bragging rights: It was a West takeover at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday as the derby between Bristol and Bath crossed the Severn for a day. The Bears came out on top 36-14 in front of tens of thousands of fans.

Let's take this outside: Alfresco Disco returned to Bristol this weekend (above), the pop-up dance party attracts usually big crowds (below), this time to the adventure playground in Lockleaze.

Behind the team: Bristol City fans turned out in big numbers to back the side against Sheffield United in the play-off first leg at Ashton Gate on Thursday. Sadly for the hosts, a red card proved key in a 3-0 defeat.

Special day: The VE Day 80 celebrations continued as the week came to an end, with beacons lit in places like Yate and a special day in Clifton Village (above) on Saturday. Bernard & Maureen Theobald (seated) were part of the celebrations.

Bird's eye view: A drone shot of the glorious surroundings just to the north east of Bristol where the Badminton Horse Trials were expected to attract 200,000 visitors this week to watch horses and riders be put through their places (below).

Call for peace: Members of Bristol's Indian and Pakistani community met up in Easton on Sunday in a show of solidarity and a rally for peace between the two countries.

Pedal power: One last look at the Bristol Drum & Bass On a Bike event which saw thousands of peoples pedalling from Ashton Gate to the city centre last Sunday.

New facility: More than 50 people gathered to see Roger Griffith MBE officially open the St Pauls Advice Centre's new office at the Junction 3 Library development.

Showtime: For fans of all things countryside, all roads led to the North Somerset Showground near Wraxall for the annual North Somerset Show, which was attended by thousands.

In the running: The new Chellaram Sports Complex at Clifton College Sports Ground has been shortlisted for a green award at the Education Property Awards 2025. The complex was built in a partnership between the college, Alec French Architects and Speller Metcafle.

New look: Post boxes in Bedminster have been given some attractive new knitted toppers to mark this year's Bedminster Secret Gardens open weekend, which will take place on 14 and 15 June.
Community group Blooming Bedminster has coordinated the project which has seen woollen flowers, bugs, bees and even gnomes created.

Just one more: Another shot from the Great Bristol Run, at the point where the crowds made all the difference as the runners approached the closing stages.
