Police who appealed for information about a woman reportedly being attacked in a car have said they now believe no assault took place.

Greater Manchester Police were investigating the incident which was said to have happened at the crossroads of Rostherne Road and Garners Lane in Stockport on Saturday.

However, officers said after exhausting all lines of inquiry no victim was ever identified.

The force said it now believes the report was made in error, albeit in good faith.

A spokeswoman said: "There has been no victim identified and there is nothing from any of the enquiries conducted, people spoken to and everything trawled to show an assault took place."
