Two dogs have died in a house fire caused by an air fryer that was left on standby.

Firefighters were called to a home in Benfleet, Essex, at about 14:00 GMT after a "significant fire" broke out on the ground floor.

A spokesperson for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said the entire house was filled with smoke, which started spreading to a neighbouring home, but that firefighters were able to bring the fire under control and ventilate both properties to prevent further damage.

Station manager Russ Freeman said: "This is a devastating incident, with two people now displaced from their home and the loss of two beloved pets. Our thoughts are with the residents during this difficult time."

Mr Freeman urged everyone to make sure their home had a working smoke alarm on every level.

"By taking these simple precautions, we can all reduce the risk of fire in our homes," he added.
