A head teacher of a primary school in Guernsey has said he is "extremely proud" of the results of a recent inspection.

Ofsted inspectors rated Amherst Primary School excellent in personal development and welfare and good in all the other categories.

Gary Hind said the report highlighted the dedication of the staff and the enthusiasm of the pupils.

The inspectors noted that he began his role in September 2024 and said the new leadership had brought stability after a "period of staffing fragility and turbulence".

'Especially high participation'

They said they found the school to promote pupils' personal development "exceptionally well".

The range of clubs offered by the school had "especially high" participation for disadvantaged pupils and those with additional learning needs, they added.

The other categories the school was inspected on included quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, leadership and management and early years provision.

One area the inspectors highlighted that could be improved was in mathematics, where they suggested teachers led pupils to apply mathematical knowledge to reasoning tasks.

However, they noted that "pupils achieve well across the curriculum, particularly in reading and writing".

Andrea Dudley-Owen, president of the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture, said: "It's fantastic to see the emphasis on reading, writing and enrichment activities that inspire confidence and resilience in our island's young people."
