Armed officers responded to an incident in Barnsley on Monday night, police say

A man accused of firing a nail gun at police officers from the roof of a building has been arrested.

Officers were called to Carlton Road, Barnsley, at about 22:40 BST on Monday following reports a white Ford Transit van was being driven dangerously and had crashed into street furniture and a petrol station.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said the van's driver, a 38-year-old man, was then believed to have climbed onto a roof and fired a nail gun towards officers, although no one was hurt.

Armed response vehicles and the ambulance service attended, and the man, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries, was arrested, they said.

He was held on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink or drugs, possession of an offensive weapon, affray, two counts of criminal damage, and two counts of assault on an emergency worker, the force spokesperson added.
