Arrests after series of town pub assaults

Police have arrested three men after a series of assaults in three pubs.

Three people were injured in the incidents in Newark, Nottinghamshire, between Saturday and Sunday, police said.

Three men, aged 19, 26 and 43, have been arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.

The force added that the 19-year-old was additionally arrested on suspicion of two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, while the other men were also arrested on suspicion of affray.

The first assault was in a beer garden, near Market Place, at about 22:55 GMT on Saturday when a man was hit on the head with a bottle or glass after a "brief altercation", police said.

A second fight was reported - outside a pub in Kirk Gate - in which a man was punched by several people and "hit repeatedly with a chair" just after 23:00.

Then, in the early hours of Sunday, the force said it was alerted to a third violent incident in a pub in Castle Gate.

A member of staff at the pub was slapped in the face when a group of people were asked to leave the premises, the force said.
