Anglian Water has completed a £1.8m project to reduce flooding in one of the fastest-growing cities in the UK.

Work on a new tank, which could hold up to 150,000 litres (33,000 gallons) of water during heavy rainfall, has been completed near Celta Road in Fletton, Peterborough.

The tank will temporarily hold stormwater until it is safe to transfer into Peterborough's Water Recycling Centre (WRC) where it will be treated and returned into the environment.

Project customer co-ordinator Chloe Bailey said: "With storms becoming more intense, it's vital that we take steps to prepare our infrastructure for the future."

In December, Anglian Water announced its investment plans for the next five years, with £694m allocated for projects in Cambridgeshire between 2025 and 2030

The work began in June last year and included installing an underground tank, new sewer pipes and upgrades to the pumping station in Wessex Close, Stanground.

Improvements aimed to help the area be prepared for extreme weather.

Ms Bailey said: "We're really pleased to have completed this important work - it's all about protecting homes and local green spaces from flooding."

She added: "We'd like to thank residents in Peterborough for their patience while we carried out this essential work."

Other upgrades across Peterborough have included installing smart water meters, laying new water pipes for homes in Great Haddon and investing £11.6m in Peterborough's WRC.

The improvements at the WRC included installing two large stormwater tanks, which will be able to hold nearly enough water to fill eight Olympic sized swimming pools.
