Hotel staff redundancies due to 'low demand'

Hotel chain Hand Picked Hotels has announced a number of staff have "entered a redundancy process".

The company said less than 8% of its total workforce in Guernsey would be affected - its total number of staff is not known.

A statement from the group, which runs hotels across the Channel Islands, said lower than expected demand and the cost and difficulty of getting to the island were to blame.

A spokesperson said they hope that the "costs and ability of people to visit Guernsey will improve".

"Unfortunately, the low demand and the inability of guests to get to Guernsey has meant that, sadly, a number of our colleagues have entered a redundancy process," the company said.

"The people whose roles have been affected have been notified and our priority is supporting them and the wider team during this period."

Hand Picked Hotels runs both the Fermain Valley and St Pierre Park hotels in Guernsey.

The spokesperson said the redundancies were only affecting Fermain Valley staff, who had been offered vacancies at the groups other hotels.

They added that there would be no redundancies for staff at its Jersey locations.
