Air rifle cat shootings prompt police warning

Two cats have been shot in incidents involving air rifles in part of Merseyside, leading to a police warning for pet owners to remain vigilant.
Both incidents happened in Halewood, with one cat shot in Fernwood Drive last week and another targeted in nearby Rainbow Drive in March.
Insp Dave Hassett said using any weapon in public "is extremely reckless" and the force was taking the issue seriously.
"Targeting animals in this way is a criminal act, not to mention a cruel one, and we are investigating and are in contact with the residents," he said.
"I want to assure people that additional resources will be in the area due to this incident and other issues, to disrupt and target anyone we find committing acts of anti-social behaviour and damage."
Local charity Tails Animal Welfare said it had seen a "worrying rise" in attacks on animals, including wildlife and birds, across the area in recent months.
Merseyside Police urged anyone aware of similar incidents to contact the force.
