A 17-year-old has released an original song in memory of her mother who died of brain cancer six years ago.

Mia, a performing arts student from Melksham, Wiltshire, began writing her own songs at the age of 13 as a way to express her feelings and emotions. A lot of her music is about her mum, Debby.

She said she had always planned to release something in her honour and the emotional lyrics for 'even now' came naturally to her during a recording session with a friend at his home studio.

"It's really nice that I've got to release it and I feel like I've made [my mum] very proud," Mia said.

Mia "struggled" with grief after her mum died, but credited music for helping her.

She said she grew up "surrounded by music", with family members who are involved in musical theatre.

When her dad gifted her a guitar for Christmas a few years ago, she began teaching herself how to play so she could improve her songwriting abilities.

Mia said her mum would be "very proud" of the song

"Music is really good for feeling your emotions.

"[The song] has had really nice responses from other people who have also lost people that they love.

"It's obviously horrible that people relate to it, but it's nice knowing that everyone's really supportive of each other," Mia said.

She added it feels "crazy" knowing she is able to help others with her own music.

In the future, Mia hopes to embark on a career in musical theatre.

After she graduates from college in the summer, she plans to write, record and release more music.
