A man has been arrested after reports a woman was ordered to drive around Weymouth by a man with a hammer.

Dorset Police said a man and woman in a Fiat Panda were approached by an "unknown man" in Grosvenor Road at about 06:00 GMT on New Year's Day.

It is alleged the man in the car then got out but was attacked before his assailant got in to the passenger seat.

The force said a 41-year-old man from Weymouth was held on suspicion of assault, false imprisonment, possession of an offensive weapon and making threats to kill.

He has been released while enquiries continue.

The woman, who was not injured, told police she drove the man with the hammer around Weymouth, including to the Esso garage in King Street.

The incident was reported at 07:30.

Det Con Liam Moss, of Dorset Police, said: "This must have been a frightening incident for the victims and a full and detailed investigation is under way.

"I am appealing to anyone who was in the area of Grosvenor Road or King Street during the relevant time period and saw any suspicious activity to please get in touch."

Witnesses and anyone with CCTV are urged to contact the force.
