Firefighters scale back grassland blaze response

Firefighters in Leicestershire have scaled back their response to a large grassland fire.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said a crew was called out to Croft Hill at about 20:15 BST on Thursday and worked through the night to bring the blaze under control.

A second appliance was requested due to the size of the fire and a third was later required after "a significant change in the wind speed" saw the fire spread further.

An area of about 2,000 sq m has been affected, the fire service said.

The fire service said in an update: "We are scaling back operations at Croft Hill, however this is an ongoing incident and fire crews will remain at the site, damping down the area and using thermal imaging to look for hot-spots."

It asked for people to "remain vigilant and practice fire safety" outdoors during warm and dry weather.
