Trial set for man accused of falling on Town fan

A football fan accused of assaulting a man and injuring a woman by falling on top of her during a match is due to stand trial in October 2026.
John Ryan appeared at Ipswich Crown Court on Tuesday charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and two counts of assault by beating.
He is accused of falling from the upper tier into a section of home supporters at Ipswich Town's Portman Road ground during their FA Cup tie against Maidstone United in January 2024.
During a plea and trial preparation hearing, the 61-year-old, of Rochester Street, Chatham, Kent, pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Following the incident in the Cobbold Stand, Suffolk Police initially said it would not be treating it as a police matter, before eventually arresting and charging Mr Ryan.
He later appeared at Ipswich Magistrates' Court last September, where he first denied the charges.
A pre-trial review hearing has been set for 30 September 2026, with the trial due to take place during a two-week warning list commencing 5 October 2026.
Mr Ryan was released on unconditional bail.
