An election to select the first mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire will take place on 1 May

On 1 May, voters will head to the polls to elect their first mayor for the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined County Authority.

A devolution deal was approved by government in September. It led to the creation of a Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority, bringing together Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

As head of the authority, the mayor will serve as a direct link to Westminster and oversee decision-making on issues such as housing and transport.

What will the Hull and East Yorkshire mayor do?

The role of the mayor is to chair the combined authority, providing overall vision and leadership.

The mayor will serve for four years and has the power to make decisions over areas including public transport, infrastructure, economic development, business, skills and regeneration.

They also act as a political figurehead who can lobby the government for funding and secure investment for the region.

How will the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined County Authority work?

The combined authority is led by the mayor and a board made up of the region's two council leaders, as well as the chair of the Business Board, and police and crime commissioner.

It will receive £13.4m a year from the government for the next 30 years.

The individual councils still look after local services such as weekly bin collections, parks and libraries.

When will voters find out who will be their first Hull and East Yorkshire mayor?

The result is expected to be announced at East Riding Leisure Centre Haltemprice on 2 May.
