Firefighters have tackled a grassfire in West Dunbartonshire as an extreme risk warning takes effect across Scotland.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were called to the blaze in the West Kilpatrick Hills near Bowling at about 14:15 on Thursday.

Four fire engines were initially sent to the scene but had to leave later due to failing light. A crew returned at first light on Friday to assess the site - they left after finding no further signs of burning.

An "extreme" risk warning for wildfires is currently in place across all low-lying areas in Scotland.

The fire service returned to the hills with a single fire engine at about 06:00 on Friday to determine whether the fire was still burning.

They found no signs of the fire still burning and left the scene a short time later.

The spokesperson said: "There is no immediate threat to life or neighbouring property."

On Tuesday, the SFRS warned that low-lying areas across the country were at "very high risk" of wildfires on Thursday.

That warning will be upgraded to "extreme" risk on Friday, as temperatures are expected to reach 18C.
