Nottinghamshire Police said officers were on patrol in Huntingdon Street when a teenager ran away from them

A 14-year-old boy has been charged after police officers in Nottingham found a machete discarded in the street.

Nottinghamshire Police said officers were on patrol in Huntingdon Street at about 12:00 GMT on Tuesday when they saw someone running away from them.

A suspect was detained on Bangor Walk, St Ann's, and the pursuing officers found the weapon nearby.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with possession of a knife in a public place, and will appear at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on 26 March.

In a statement the force said officers had carried out more than 370 hours of plain clothes patrols in Nottingham city centre since 1 March following three knife crime-related incidents, including a stabbing in Primark.

PC Daniel Cresswell said: "Knife crime is a force priority so I hope the public welcome our proactive work in the city centre.

"Many of our patrols are in plain clothes, alongside the high-visibility policing also currently in place in the city, but we are working hard to keep people as safe as possible."
